John McCord, Head of Day Sale, said, “We are delighted with the results from the Day Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art. There was spirited bidding in the room and online for works by blue-chip masters, including John Baldessari, Yayoi Kusama, John McCracken, Richard Prince and Subodh Gupta. We were particularly pleased with the outcome of Joseph Cornell’s Untitled (Hôtel De L'étoile, Suzanne Miller), which realized over seven times its pre-sale estimate, and Lee Ufan’s From Line, No. 790143, which sold for $449,000 against an estimate of $200,000-300,000. World auction records were set for Markus Schinwald, with his 2009 portrait Adam, and for Wolfgang Tillmans, with Freischwimmer 120. These results, combined with the strong performance of the Evening Sale, signal a confident market, with discerning buyers demonstrating continued enthusiasm for high quality works.”
