Bidders from over forty countries participated in the sale online, on the phone, and in our bustling saleroom, leading to truly exceptional results. An untitled work on paper Jean-Michel Basquiat soared to nearly six times its estimate and Shara Hughes’ Berlin realized a remarkable $75,000 against an estimate of $10,000-15,000. We were particularly excited to see new records set for Jon Rafman, Petra Cortright and Kurt Kauper, and to see the single-owner section of Contemporary Cuban Art sell 100% by lot, more-than-doubling its pre-sale estimate. The enthusiastic response by bidders to Latin American works in this 20th Century and Contemporary auction is a testament to Phillips’ forward-looking decision to fully integrate these two important collecting categories.
