NEW YORK – 15 NOVEMBER 2018 – Phillips’ November Evening Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art in New York realized $88,536,500 / £69,448,031 / €78,248,559, selling 82% by lot and 71% by value.  Combined with the Day Sale, which achieved $25,532,625/ £20,027,799/ €22,565,734, the highest total in company history, the weekly total has been brought to $114,069,125/ £89,475,830/ €100,814,293.

A testament to Phillips’ increased commitment to the Modern Art market, Joan Miró’s Femme dans la nuit met with enthusiasm from the saleroom, selling for $22,590,000 after prolonged bidding. Painted in 1945, the work is an important example of Miró’s output created during the Second World War and is among the most significant from this series to remain in private hands. Other Modern works by Giorgio Morandi, Rembrandt Bugatti, Pierre Bonnard and Henri Laurens also performed well.

Jean-Paul Engelen and Robert Manley, Worldwide Co-Heads of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, said, “After we achieved a record Day Sale yesterday, we were pleased with our strong results for the Modern works in the sale and the number of records we set for works by KAWS, Henri Laurens, Amy Sillman, and Carmen Herrera. We were also delighted by the performance of Pull on Thru Tha Nite, Christina Quarles’ first work to be sold at auction, which achieved over seven times its low estimate. We look forward to our next series of auctions in Hong Kong later this month.”

John McCord and Rebekah Bowling, Co-Heads of Phillips’ Day Sale, said jointly, “After our record-breaking Day Sale in May, we were delighted to see the momentum continue into our Fall season, with the November auction breaking the record for a Day Sale at Phillips once again. Bidders from over fifty countries participated in the sale through our online platforms, on the phone, and in a packed saleroom, all vying for works of Modern, Post-War, Latin American, and Contemporary Art alike. Leading the auction was Tomoo Gokita’s Club Mature, which soared past its estimate and sold for $807,000, more-than-doubling the artist’s previous auction record. We were also pleased to see such strong enthusiasm for Diego Rivera’s Don Lupito, which sold for $591,000 against its low estimate of $350,000, for Mark Tobey’s Between Black and White, which realized $531,000, and for Hank Willis Thomas’ Zero Hour (from Wayfarer), which quintupled its estimate at $50,000, setting a new record for the artist. These results confirm a steadfast and robust middle market, which we are confident will continue into 2019.”
