New York – October 5 – Phillips de Pury & Company’s Photographs and Arc of Photography: A Private East Coast Collection sells at 450 Park Avenue, comprising 272 lots, sold 91% by value and 82% by lot totaling $6,929,250 (including premium).

Phillips de Pury & Company opened the New York Photographs week with stellar results, confirming the Photographs Department’s growth and leadership in classic and contemporary photographs. World auction records were set across the field for 19th through 21st century photographs, demonstrating the expansive breadth of interest in the medium.

Sales highlights include Nadar (Gaspard Félix) and Adrien Tournachon’s Pierrot with Fruit, 1854-1855, which brought $542,500 and set a world auction record for the fraternal duo as well as Nadar; Richard Avedon’s The Beatles Portfolio: John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul McCartney, musicians, London, 1967, which brought $722,500, becoming the second-highest price ever achieved for a work by Avedon at auction as well as a world auction record for the portfolio; Man Ray’s Untitled (Self-portrait of Man Ray), 1933, which brought $398,500, more than tripling the presale high estimate; and Candida Höfer’s Handelingenkamer Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal Den Haag III, 2004, which sold for $104,500 and set a new world auction record for the Libraries series by the artist.
