Phillips’ November Sales of 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design Achieve HK$271 Million / US$34.8 Million

The Highest Ever Total for a 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design Auction Series Staged by Phillips in Asia

8 New Artist Auction Records Set

MADSAKI, Genieve Figgis, Bernard Frize, Stanley Whitney, Natee Utarit,

Daniel Arsham, Felipe Pantone, and Joyce Pensato

Jonathan Crockett, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art and Deputy Chairman, Asia, and Isaure de Viel Castel, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Hong Kong, said: “At HK$ 271 million, our November sales in Hong Kong mark the highest ever total for a 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design auction series for Phillips in Asia. The Evening Sale saw a 100% increase from the previous year, in addition to the 29% increase in our Day Sale. Honouring our commitment to offering the most sought-after Asian and Western artists, we were delighted to set multiple world records, including the top two prices for Genieve Figgis, and records for MADSAKI, Bernard Frize, Stanley Whitney, Natee Utarit, Joyce Pensato, Felipe Pantone and Daniel Arsham. Phillips is renowned for including newer artists in our auctions and we were particularly excited to make the Asian auction debut for six Western artists, whose works all ignited a bidding frenzy, including Helen Frankenthaler, Lynn Chadwick, Pat Steir, Joyce Pensato, André Butzer, and Jonathan Lyndon Chase. The season was led by Zao Wou-Ki’s 29.05-31.10.68, followed closely by Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Thermopolae, demonstrating our ability to sell both Asian and Western Modern and Contemporary artworks to our escalating client base in Asia. And Phillips continues to lead the market in introducing the very best of 20th Century Design to Asia. Iconic Danish and American Design saw a 100% sell-through rate yet again this season.”
