  • Catalogue Essay

Born in 1976 in Chengdu, Zheng Delong is one of the few prominent contemporary Chinese artists to have no formal fine art training. His work is characterized by powerful images that are strong in colour and shape – executing with a swirling, blurring and metallic appearance that give animation to a physically inanimate object. Mixing elements of abstraction with the basic tenants of figurative representation, Delong epitomizes the marriage between the old and the new in Chinese culture. Zheng’s work heavily draws influence from the five elements – fire, metal, earth, water and wood – incorporating its dynamic processes, functions and characteristics, as representations of human emotions and desires on canvas. Zheng’s portraits of the ‘Dog’ highlights his understanding of the complexity of these patterns and uses colour and texture to give the philosophy a new depth and resonance in contemporary Chinese art.
