The Alphabet Project was part of the Literacy Through Photography Programme which Wendy Ewald started as a partnership between the Center for Documentary Studies and the Durham Public Schools, USA. At its core, the programme encourages children to explore their world as they photograph scenes from their own lives, and then to use their images as catalysts for verbal and written expression. Most of the students were from Latin America and they decided to make a Spanish Alphabet to show the Anglo students their language.
A portion of the sale from this lot will go to the Teacher Fund at the Centre for Documentary Studies, a fund that teachers can apply to for money to carry out visual projects with their students.
