Sophie Calle's series The Hotel from 1983 continues to explore the theme of documenting and coming closer to strangers' lives. The work is a series of 21 diptychs which show all signs of a traveler'snightmare. Calle worked for three weeks as a house maid in aVenetian hotel, but instead of cleaning and tidying the roomsallocated to her each day, she unscrupulously went through thetravelers' luggage, photographing individual items and noting downher observations. The photographs and texts confront the spectatorwith fragments of strangers' biographies, personal peculiarities, intimate and everyday habits. Through the eyes of the artist thespectator becomes a voyeur, but even then does not gain a clearimpression of these unknown persons.
