Sascha Braunig - Editions & Works on Paper New York Tuesday, October 22, 2024 | Phillips
  • Expanding upon her oeuvre of quasi-human figures, Sascha Braunig’s Giantess multiple of two oversized shoes with sharp, elongated toes and heel spurs is footwear fit for a whimsical western witch. A pair of the shoes were featured in the 2018 exhibition Mutations on New York City’s High Line, which saw artists explore the relationship between man and nature, inspired by the controlled environment that the unique, elevated park encapsulates. Placed peeking out of the High Line’s planting beds, Braunig’s shoes hinted at the presence of one of her fantastical painted characters, or perhaps just the hallucination of feminist folklore. Playing with the organic landscaping against the urban downtown backdrop, Braunig’s Giantess evoked a fairy tale come to life in New York City – but whether the shoes belonged to the villain or the hero of the story remained a mystery.
