  • Catalogue Essay

This large scale drawing belongs to Longo's acclaimed Monsters series through which the artist reproduces the moment of a tremendous surge of unleashed force. Rendered in high contrast black and white, a signature style that has come to define Longo's works, the present lot is a prime example of the artist's vast charcoal drawings of thundering waves. Each depiction in the series bears the name of a renowned surfing beach or surfing term.
Devoid of human subject, identifiable landmarks and colour, the rich expanse of the velvety, thickly applied charcoal render his striking drawings with an abstract sculptural quality that parallels the subject's vastness, mystery and intensity.
