  • Catalogue Essay

There is a striking formal and material diversity in Piotr Uklański’s artwork, as well as an overarching interest in exploitative, spectacular and banal cultural forms. Uklański’s tendency to make art without limits, crossing genres is a means of resistance. This strategy allows Uklański to engage with art/entertainment, high/low dichotomies without resorting to customary hierarchies or consensual value judgments and without being constrained to one classification.

In the current lot, A Room as a Face, Uklańsi installs “a room” within the room of the exhibition. Typical of Uklański’s body of work, this polished installation challenges our assumptions, and asks us to look at our everyday world in a new way. With lamps as surrogates for eyes and double doors functioning as a mouth, the “room” becomes a portrait.
