  • Catalogue Essay

These paintings (from Soulages' solo exhibition at Robert Miller Gallery, NewYork in 2005) were first called "Black Light," thus designating a light thatwas inseparable from the black that reflected it. In order not to limit themto an optical phenomenon, I invented the word "Beyondblack" – across black– a light transmittted by black and like "Across the Channel" or "Across theRhine" designating another country. "Beyondblack" also designates anothercountry, another mental field than that of simply black. (Pierre Soulages taken from B, Adams, Pierre Soulages, Outrenoir, NewYork, 2005)
