The figure in the elaborate hat with her back to us is fifteen year old Julie Manet, Berthe Morisot's daughter and Edouard Manet's neice, pinning flowers in her cousin Paulette Gobillard's hat.  As the poet Mallarmé joked 'Julie en chapeau Gainsborough'.  This large scale lithograph is the most famous and sought after of Renoir's prints.
