  • Catalogue Essay

Russian painter, graphic artist and poet, Pavel Filonov is today considered one of Russia’s highest regarded artists. Extremely rare, most of his work was donated by his sister, Yevdokiva Nikolayevna Glebova, to the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg after his death in 1942. During his lifetime, he refused to sell many of his paintings or even allow one-man exhibitions of his work; reportedly, only 40 paintings by Filonov are in private hands. According to Filonov, true art belongs to the people. These exceptional watercolors are exemplary and rare.
