  • Catalogue Essay

Matías Sánchez is a German-born, Seville-based contemporary painter widely revered for his lively compositions that strike a unique balance between abstraction and figuration. Executed in a sumptuously thick impasto brushwork, built up and manipulated on the canvas as though made of moulding clay, each painting can be understood as the materialisation of the artist's wild and whimsical mind.

As a captivating example from his body of work, Parodia bursts with vigorous colour and form, presenting the viewer with disorder and play in a scene full of motifs that we are encouraged to seek out as if participating in a game of sorts. At the same time, however, the artist has explained how he believes that it is the physicality of painting, rather than the work’s subject matter, that drives his creative process:

“The important thing is how that painting is painted and how it seduces the viewer. The intelligence of the execution, its mastery, how the artist manages the viewer’s perspective from where he wants. Where does the viewer enter the painting, walk through it. and then exit? Those are the things that make a work of art timeless.” —— Matías Sánchez

The present work as featured on the artist’s Instagram

Drawing inspiration from artistic and literary icons such as Rembrandt, Pablo Picasso, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kafka, Sánchez pays homage to these influences through the cast of spirited vagrants and crooks that feature across his oeuvre, their faces revealing certain shared similarities that Sánchez renders in a tongue-in-cheek way. The character at the centre of the present work, for example, dons the same bushy beard and black bowler hat as painter Henri Matisse, whereas the green-haired dancing figure in the lower left perhaps appears as a more cheerful version of DC Comic’s The Joker. Intermixed with other toothy expressions and a devious rat, the result is a ‘buffet for the eyes’ i, forming Sanchez’s unmistakable style.
