  • Catalogue Essay

Matthias Weischer’s paintings of interiors are explorations into architecture pressing the boundaries of spatial illusion with complex employment of obsessive patterning, incongruous perspective and embellishment. The environments depicted in Weischer’s paintings are of pure invention based on a subtle subversion of logic ultimately leaving its viewer laden with psychological tension.Through the banality of design, the artist presents a state of contemporary consciousness where model living is reflected as both desire and anxiety.
Stube, with its more subdued pallette is a break away from Weischer’s more recognisable vibrant use of colour, but remains to exploit the artist’s signature language of space creating a sombre, surreal environment. The title Stube directly translated into English as ‘Living room’ conjures up a sense of contradiction, as the space in all ofWeischer’s paintings, is devoid of any human presence and provides no sense of comfort or familiarity.
