Marcel-Louis Baugniet was one of the leading exponents of abstract art in Belgium before he embarked on a career in furniture design.  Largely influenced by the geometry and constructivism of the Bauhaus movement, Baugniet began designing furniture.  He started his own business as a decorator in Brussels in 1930 and introduced his furniture at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in 1937 in Paris.
