French painter Loïc Raguénès lived and worked in the scenic western coastal province of Brittany, and was inspired by his sublime surroundings. Natural elements such as the constellations and the weather, and in particular water, powerfully informed his artistic practice, especially the relentless, everlasting motion of the ocean. Largely abstract in their execution and composed of delicately rendered figurative forms and shapes, Raguénès’ lyrical paintings are an homage to the particular spirit of Brittany – its tonal hues, its atmospheric aesthetic and its rhythmic essence: in his work, ‘The ocean is an element in constant motion, both in reality and our collective memory. Water functions not as vessel for meaning but as a source of illumination and reflection.’ (De Brock Gallery, online)

Born in Besançon in 1968, Loïc Raguénès was a former graduate of the Beaux-Arts institute of Besançon, Raguénès had been represented by C L E A R I N G since 2011. He was the subject of several solo exhibitions at C L E A R I N G, both in New York, Brussels and Beverly Hills. Other notable exhibitions were held at De Brock Gallery, Knokke, Belgium; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dole, France; Musée François Pompon, Saulieu, France; Circuit, Lausanne, Switzerland and Galeria Zero, Milan, Italy.
