  • Catalogue Essay

Born in 1963 in Tehran, Khosrow Hassanzadeh studied painting at Mojitama-e-Honar University and then Persian Literature at Azad University, finishing in 1999. Today he combines a career as an actor with another as a visual artist, living and working in Tehran. His work is represented in the collections of the British Museum, London, and the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art... Complementing the series of boxers, Hassanzadeh has also produced a series of silkscreen paintings of Pahlavan wrestlers. Around the edges of these works he has written a blessing used by Ali, the originator of the Shi'ite branch of Islam. As ever, Hassanzadeh knows instinctively how to position his art within the Iranian cultural consciousness.
