Born in 1958 and raised in Hollywood, California, Kenny Scharf operates in terms and styles similar to a contemporary of his Keith Haring. Scharf continues to incorporate pop culture into the fine arts, opting for well-versed cartoon images in lieu of abstract formalism. In the present lot Red Jello Fello, painted in 1984, the artist constructs an elaborately colorful canvas replete with bold images—the red bubble nose in particular, dominating our visual score—which plays fun at the clown-like subject but also incorporates our preconceived notions of the figure into the realm of painting. His composition combines with the quirkiness of cartoons with the deliberate methodology of the medium he chooses.
