  • Catalogue Essay

Unknowing Man's Nature was a central piece in Jules de Balincourt's 2007 solo show of the same name. "As for the eponymous Unknowing Man's Nature – the flashiest canvas in terms of colors with multiple shades of red, orange, and gold as well as a burst of white in its midst – it commands attention like no other with a flurry of light rays covering its surface." (I. Dupuis, ‘Jules de Balincourt', Flash Art,November/December 2007, p. 108)
As exemplified by the present lot, Jules de Balincourt's paintings live in a realm between brilliant neo-hippie optimism and world-wary apocalyptic visions. His signature rays of colour ricochet throughout the composition, acting as either beams of ecstasy from the heavens or a destructive force, like sunrays amplified by global warming to melt a glacier. The potential destruction in the content is paired with the powerful beauty of the painting.
