  • Catalogue Essay

Josef Hoffmann's decoration for the present vase comprises cordate leaves and bellflowers held within a strict geometric ground. Hard shapes against soft, Hoffmann's motif hints at the Wiener Werkstätte's many contradictions: checkerboards versus blossoms; gold versus clay. Cased flowers bloomed often at the Werkstätte; examples include a gold and opal pendant by Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill (1911); a ceramic jar by Dagobert Peche (1912); Mäda Primavesi’s gold and ivory bracelet designed by Hoffmann (1914); and, much earlier, in the Werkstätte’s own monogram -- the rose mark.
