The “Antony” wall cabinet endures as an icon of Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand’s long history of collaborative work. This model was produced by Ateliers Jean Prouvé in 1954 for a dormitory at the Cité Universitaire d’Antony, after having won a design competition put forth by the institution. The model drew on Perriand’s earlier design for the “Mexique” bookshelf which similarly employed wooden slabs supported by painted steel box units. Perriand’s deft integration of the industrial products, which Prouvé excelled at producing, into these residential designs perfectly reflects both designers shared values of accessibility and practicality. The “Antony” cabinet’s clean lines and compact form made it ideal for small spaces, aligning with the project’s intention of maximizing functionality in student living environments.
