French jeweler Jean Desprès was one of the most important of the Artiste-Bijoutiers associated with the Art Deco movement. He was also the only jeweler who actually made the pieces himself, making him a "studio jeweler," and thus giving his work a direct artistic quality. He was associated with such forward thinkers as Georges Braque, one of the founders of Cubism, who was a great friend of Desprès. For a short time after WWI, Desprès worked at an aircraft production plant and these rigid mechanical shapes can be seen in his work, which clearly reflects the new, pared-down aesthetic of the 1920s and 1930s.
