Artist and industrial printmaker Irfan Hendrian’s (b. 1987, Indonesia) Mold series recollects, records and reconstructs the sceneries of his hometown. The process of constructing these sculptures in paper—his signature medium—is labour-intensive and involves industrial equipment, highlighting the arduous task of recovering long-lost memories and the irony of such an endeavour.

Hendrian is known for his formal explorations in abstraction. His practice draws on the Bauhaus’ approach and method: to reduce, subtract and simplify everything to its most sublime, essential and substantial state. Collage is a technique that allows Hendrian to maintain this purist approach to materials. Rather than creating images, he believes that through composing visual arrangements of objects, a particular aesthetic value emerges.

Hendrian studied at LASALLE College of Arts, Singapore and the Wanganui School of Design, New Zealand, before completing an MA in Fine Arts at Bandung Institute of Technology in 2016. He has held several solo shows, including Terenne, Jeonbuk Museum of Art, South Korea (2016); Logical Aesthetics, Via Via, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2012); and Secular World, Asbestos Artspace, Indonesia (2011). Since 2011, Hendrian has been involved in numerous group exhibitions, art fairs and biennales, including Art|Jog 10: Changing Perspectives, Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2017); Karyawisata, Jogja Contemporary, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2015); ASEAN 5, Penang, Malaysia (2015); and Indonesia Contemporary Fiber Art #1, Art:1Artspace, Jakarta (2012).
