This design won second prize at the Seconda Selettiva di Cantù, Design Di Cantù in 1957.  Only two examples of each credenza were ever produced.

Upon graduation in 1937 from the National Central School of Applied Arts in Finland, Ilmari Tapiovaara went to work for the office of Le Corbusier.  After a bout of working as artistic manager for various furniture and carpentry factories in the years that followed, Tapiovaara and his wife opened their own design office.  In 1952, he was teaching at the Illinois Insitute of Technology in Chicago and in 1953 began working for Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.  By the time the pieces in the present lot were produced, Tapiovaara had already won four gold medals in the Milan Triennales, three prizes in the Cantun International furniture competition, and the Good Design Award in Chicago.
