Gareth Neal established his design practice in 2002 in the creative hub of East London. Neal specialises in the production of unique pieces, developed exclusively for individual clients and companies. His practice combines the technical modes of 3D computer drawing and CNC processes, with the intricacy of professional craftsmanship.Neal graduated from Buckinghamshire University in 1996 with a BA Honours in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship. His work has received critical acclaim and has been featured in numerous publications and exhibitions, both in the UK and internationally. Neal’s selected exhibitions include Telling Tales at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and The Unexpected at Sotheby’s, New York.
Gareth Neal was selected to participate in the 2010 Vauxhall Collective, one of the UK’s largest arts bursary schemes. This year’s theme was centred around The Great British Weekend and Neal created a stunning range of common picnic pieces; simple, traditional forms dressed up in exquisitely executed marquetry. His homage to the tradition of the family picnic is unexpected but remarkably Neal. Collaborating with one of the last artisan marquetry companies in the UK, Neal continues to straddle the line of contemporary design and historical craft. The Urban Picnic reclaimed neglected spaces of the East-End to create pop-up urban picnic sites for Londoners. Stretches of city tarmac and concrete were temporarily transformed into inviting grassy spaces for visitors to picnic under the summer sun.
Gareth Neal’s Urban Picnic series was recently included in the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Power of Making Exhibition.
