In our present lot, Afternoon Sacrifice II, artist G R Iranna utilizes the notion of the blindness, removing the sense of sight from his figure creating an atmosphere of high tension. Blindness for Iranna is a process that erases cognition and memory, it creates a new citizen with a clean mind. In this work the act of blinding the figure creates a sense of isolation made more poignant with the inclusion of the charging bull in the mid ground providing his audience with an internal fear that comes with the concept of the removal of ones vision. Although blinded, the figure in Afternoon Sacrifice II is poised and statuesque, creating a dichotomy between power and vulnerability and is a perfect example of Iranna’s ability to simultaneously present conflicting ideas in a seamless manner.
