In the 1920s and 30s Czech photographer František Drtikol created a highly accomplished body of work that included a significant subset of dynamic and energetic nude studies, such as the one offered here. Drtikol’s exhibition prints were typically realized in non-silver processes, and he is regarded as a virtuoso of the pigment print process. His notations on the reverse of this print indicate that it is a carbon print. Drtikol authority Vladimir Birgus notes that the photographer frequently used the terms carbon and pigment interchangeably, and that most of his extant exhibition prints were rendered in the carbon process. Both the pigment and carbon print techniques are labor-intensive and difficult to master, but both yield prints of exceptionally rich tonality and depth.
