Released in 2001, the Octa movement was meticulously engineered to allow F.P. Journe to integrate future complications into the mechanism, without modifying its golden proportions. The secret lies in a 1mm deep interval between the movement and the dial, where the watchmaker plays with its composition to try and compact a full complication into that space.
The present timepiece is a rare Octa Lune wristwatch from the Boutique Collection, available exclusively via the F.P. Journe flagships only. Launched in 2009, models from this series are dressed in a striking pink gold, black dialled uniform, tailored to set themselves apart from standard issues.
With an “L” serial, distinct dial configuration and a solid 18K pink gold self-winding cal. 1300.3, this example possesses all the desired qualities of a second-generation Octa Lune. Deliberately designed with the hours, minutes and seconds positioned on the right against a white backdrop, this allows the wearer to discretely glance at the time by letting the watch slip out slightly from under the cuff. Although left-handed collectors may not be able to enjoy this thoughtful gesture, right-handed wearers will therefore not appear disrespectful when checking the watch in the company of others. The dial is further completed with a moonphase display at 7 o’clock and a power reserve indication above it, along with a slightly off-center date aperture at just below 12 o’clock.
The first to appear in PHILLIPS and possibly in auction, the present Boutique Collection Octa Lune is offered in excellent overall condition with its original accessories. The fact that this configuration was only in production between 2008 and 2013, this well-preserved specimen with its full set of accessories will be a prize for any collection of rare, modern horological masterpieces.
Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.
Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
