In Les Andelys, Frankreich, Elger Esser depicts a tranquil lake and forest scene, seemingly frozen in time. The reflection exposed in the scene between the sky and the water seems to be reversible, top to bottom. The dreamlike, subdued colors of the landscape evoke the expression of great Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich and the lyrical musings of 19th century French poets like Baudelaire who believed that the conception of beauty was the in the transformation of time and place. The strength of Esser’s photograph lies in his hybridization of past and present artistic styles; this particular scene transports the viewer into a placid setting of nature untouched by civilization. The tension between past and present, realism and abstraction, is precisely what makes Esser’s artistic efforts so riveting and breathtaking.
