  • Catalogue Essay

De Bethune, founded in 2002 in Switzerland, is certainly one of the brands that best symbolizes 21st century watchmaking and as such it was only normal to offer not one but two lots from this exceptional brand in this Retrospective sale dedicated to the finest watches of this millennium (please see lot 267 for the De Bethune DB 28).

The element that sets DeBethune apart is the fact that its co-founder and Master Watchmaker Denis Flageollet is as much of a scientist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher as he is a watchmaker. Always pushing the boundaries of watchmaking, inspired by horological greats but creating his own path and inventing watchmaking of the new millennium with over 30 in-house movement development, a dozen patent registrations and over eighteen world premiere innovations!

The present DB 27 in titanium is a sight to behold with its polished titanium case, beautiful salmon dial and blue accents giving the watch incredible charisma. The 3 dimensional architecture of the dial with its brushed and polished surfaces and concentric circles (which the brand calls microlight engraving) literally give life to the dial. The spring loaded floating lug system of the case enables the watch to adapt to the wrist for ease of wear.

The fully in-house caliber S233 features many of the De Bethune in-house developed innovations, like the patented self-regulating twin barrel, silicon/white gold balance and the balance spring with flat terminal curve, the triple pare-chute shock-absorbing system, the titanium/platinum oscillating weight and the silicon escape-wheel which can be admired via the porthole in the back. The watch also boasts a 6 day power reserve.

The Titan Hawk in titanium with salmon dial was made in only 22 pieces.
