Barnaby Furnas’s work abounds with narrative and pictorial content and centers on issues of war, violence and politics.  Fireside and Fireside 2, a two-picture battle scene, features a dark figure standing amidst an apocalyptic setting. An explosion of orange and yellow-white hues, suggestive of explosion, radiates upwards and dissolves into a grey sky. Furnas displays complete mastery of his chosen medium; watercolor is applied meticulously to create details of startling precision, such as the tree’s branches, or bled in broad washes to form clouds and puffs of smoke. When these disparate forms come together, these paintings reveal a tension between figure and ground, figuration and abstraction.
