  • Catalogue Essay

Two of Germany's most contemporary and foremost painters collaborate on Situation and create just that with their setting. Situation is a composition detailing Oehlen and Meese's critique on systems of failure, such as politics, art and ideological systems. In an overtly humorous way, keeping to their submission to tongue-in -cheek artworks, the two artists have reduced a female figure to a scrambled face, two overgrown breasts and a brain which counteract with the subtle and sober still life figuration to her left. Here sexual politics and visual ideas become tangled with scenes of archetypal abstraction perhaps commenting on the figure of females within our society relative to mundane realities.
