  • Catalogue Essay

It is often that whenever one thinks of an A. Lange & Söhne timepiece, the Lange 1 is perhaps the first timepiece that comes into mind. With its collection established in 1994, the Lange 1 timepiece redefined horology featuring a unique asymmetrical dial display with a large date window and a large retrograde style power reserve indication. Gaining commercial success throughout the years, the Lange 1 became a true icon of the brand.

After 11 years of the initial launch of the Lange 1, the manufacturer released various iterations of the model featuring various complications, including the Lange 1 Time Zone in 2005. A dual time wristwatch featuring all the iconic elements of the model stringed with an additional dial positioned to the 4 O’clock position for the second time zone as well as a city ring featuring all 24 time zones of the world, the Lange 1 Time Zone is indeed impressive. Superbly practical, the additional dial allows the wearer to keep track of home time as well as the local time of destination all on the same dial. Powered by A. Lange & Söhne’s legendary in-house movement cal. L.031.1, the caliber is composed of the firm’s famous German silver secured via its signature ¾ plate with hand-engraved balance cock.

The present example in platinum from circa 2007 is offered in excellent overall condition with very minimal wear. Charmed by the original guarantee and box, the present Lange 1 Time Zone is the perfect timepiece for the modern traveler.

  • Artist Biography

    A. Lange & Söhne

    German • 1845

Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.

On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
