Amid China's flurry of real estate development in the 1990s, Zhang Dali's graffiti heads sprang up to mark the walls of traditional courtyards slated to make way for high-rise developments in Beijing. Zhang was crowned China's first graffiti artist with this "Demolition" series. The signature works in this series highlight the destruction of Beijing's culturally valuable properties as well as the displacement of its long-time residents, concerns that were frequently glossed over in the march towards economic modernization.
