Wang rose to prominence with his brand of "Gaudy Art" that criticized the consumer-obsessed culture of an economically prospering China. His recent large-scale works such as "Port" and the "Another Battle" series are more somber metaphors for the social and cultural confrontations of contemporary China. The works recall patriotic Chinese war movies of the artist's childhood of the 1960s, with the artist posing as a wounded but tenacious commander leading his dazed troops.
