  • Catalogue Essay

The Old Church was created in 1992 when Vassiliev was already living in immigration. The painting is filled with reminiscences of the past days in the artist’s homeland, of the semi-dilapidated churches, where time materializes in decrepitude, in crumbling plaster, in destroyed structure.

Oleg Vassiliev's works are a poetical interpretation of the past and present life, the reflections about space, light and colour... As an artist - he is a lyrist that found his own style and theme. (I. Petrova, Oleg Vassiliev – Memory Speaks, St. Petersburg, 2005, p. 6)
The theme of memory is one of the most important for me. In a painting I wanted to include not only what there was in front of me but also the impressions of the way to the chosen place, what there was in the memory. (O. Vassiliev, Oleg Vassiliev – Memory Speaks, St. Petersburg, 2005, p. 22 and p. 24)
