  • Catalogue Essay

In the present lot a face is depicted in a seemingly indifferent expression; the contours create a rather comical figure, though the horizontal deconstruction of the face suggests otherwise. This feeling is emphasized by the positioning of the figure – centre right, while grey channels around the neck stir a sense of suffocation. The work is paradoxical, conveying both energy and wistfulness. Although a figure in parts, each characteristic is distinctive on its own: the composition doesn’t appear to be unduly fragmented. Scheibitz thus manages to translate pictorially the malaise of contemporary culture, all the while offsetting such feelings by infusing the viewer with a sense of humour, and consequently, a sense of hope.
