Gupta has always grappled with complex issues of identity, nostalgia, and stereotyping. Drawing attention to serious subjects that have surrounded him his entire life, Gupta works across a wide range of mediums through which he broadcasts his concerns to an international audience.
Born in Khagaul, India and now living and working in New Delhi, Subodh Gupta works from his own memory bank. Examining the stark contrasts of a rural simplicity and that of a growing urban globalisation, he works with existing objects and a wide range of materials to create emblems and symbols of the society around him. In their simplicity they reflect the social, economic and cultural complexities of India today. Choosing basic mundane items such as bicycles, luggage or buckets, Gupta aims at symbolising everyday life, blurring the boundaries between high and low culture.
