  • Catalogue Essay

A photographic illustrator by trade, in 2004 Stuart Haygarth began translating his interest in visual collages into design by creating objects out of large quantities of mundane items in order to give ‘banal and overlooked objects a new significance’.  The present lot is an example of this concept with the amassed collection of prescription eyeglasses and spectacles, which are otherwise ordinary objects until they have accumulated into an assemblage that relays a story.  Secured from a charitable organization called Vision Aid Overseas, the eyeglasses  create a poignant balance between their old use and their new use.  As the eyeglasses enable vision, so does the light of the chandelier and together they produce a dramatic effect for the viewer as the light source reflects off of multiple lenses.
