  • Catalogue Essay

A photographer, playwright, novelist and philosopher, Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz was a key figure in the Polish avant-garde movement of the early 20th Century . While photographers such as Edward Weston and Alexander Rodchenko are celebrated for their early experimentation with portrait photography, it is argued that Witkieweicz was, in fact, among the pioneers to experiment with close-up, tightly cropped portraits, producing similar images of himself and his circle of friends nearly a decade before his contemporaries.
