  • Catalogue Essay

Breaking away from clearly defined sections of colour, the present lot by Serge Poliakoff is illuminated by emotive stroke work. Compared to his identifiable style constituted by fields of colour Poliakoff reveals a more expressive side with shadow-like blocks of blue among a sea of white. The colour separation continues to reflect Poliakoff’s primary interest in colour contrast, but the calm produced in his other works is missing. The present lot is more representative of the idea that “while figurative art exists within the framework of the painting and remains within it, abstract art goes beyond that framework in order to create a cosmos.
