Working from one of the oldest renowned centers of ceramic production in Japan, Ryoji Koie has overlapped Japanese ceramic tradition with experimental and often performance art to create an innovative body of work. Frequently exploring contemporary social and political themes, Koie uses traditional forms and glazes as a deliberate element of surprise in his work. Koie’s work is in the permanent collections of numerous institutions including the de Young Museum, San Francisco, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
