  • Catalogue Essay

The works of Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin are dominated by the
symbolism of the mythical and archaic, of the sign. They deconstruct a
semiotic symbol through its visual decorative ornamentation. The sign as
the initial element of a word and the word as the initial element of a sign are
their favored, ambivalent paradox. The hieroglyph and sign, characteristic of
the Gerlovins, give rise to an interesting interpretation of a “Renaissancestyle”
approach combined with an “OldTestament” element. There is a play
of sign and sense, sense and feeling, visual image and emotional element.
They create visual images of hidden thoughts by the words of their
    “anthropomorphic” poetry.
