Born in Harbin in 1977, Qiu Xiaofei studied at the Central Academy under Liu Xiaodong and rose to prominence in the 2001 exhibition at Beijing’s Palace Archives curated by Fang Fang. His installations and paintings of photo albums and other personal possessions sculpt a version of his childhood via a Proustian methodology that is less naïve than it appears at first glance. In particular, Qiu’s paintings of photo albums are evocative of memory’s double-edged power to both preserve and distort. ‘In depicting his past, Qiu Xiaofei recalls a personal experience that is also a record of the history that defines him. What happens to one’s sense of self, he muses, when all those tangible elements that should be the stuff of memories have been dissipated? It is as if with every step he takes forward, another portion of his life is erased behind him, annihilating his past in the process.’
    (K. Smith, The Real Thing: Contemporary Art from China, Liverpool 2007, p. 85) Qiu was one of the youngest artists included in theTate Liverpool’s “The RealThing: Contemporary Art from China” in 2007.
