The innovative landscape paintings of Chinese artist Qiu Shihua follow radical paths in search of traditional ideals. They evoke sensations that go beyond the boundaries of rational understanding. His large canvases are relatively empty, making it extremely difficult to reproduce in photographic images. However, when viewing his paintings in person, a landscape emerges and the viewer is able to make out different shapes within the image, which in effect, produces a unique visual experience. Physical surroundings, mood, and lighting play a large role in influencing what the viewer sees in Qui's works. Qiu’s paintings achieve a sense of relaxation, helping the viewer to enter into a state of mindful awareness that is receptive rather than active, and then to be rewarded with the revealed landscape.
