  • Catalogue Essay

"In 1961, I was commissioned to make a hanging for the Director’s office in the new Shell Tower building, on the south bank of the Thames. The architect wanted a tapestry 13’ x 7’6”, but although he wanted the firm feel and ribbed surface of normal weft-faced tapestry technique, he had a budget of about a quarter of the cost of a traditional tapestry. I called my solution a strip tapestry; all the early ones were of this type.  I designed something like a tapestry but which was much quicker – it was woven in different widths, and occasionally, in a strip, there was a little bit of tapestry weave. The strips were then sewn together". (Linda Theophilus in conversation with Peter Collingwood, Peter Collingwood – Master Weaver, 1998)
