  • Catalogue Essay

The name Patek Philippe has always been synonymous with high-quality complicated mechanisms. Whether late 19th century pocket watches or early 20th century wristwatches, the perpetual calendar chronograph has been at the forefront of their innovation and design. The reference 1518, their first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch, released in 1941, set the tone for those that followed, including the 2499, 3970, 5970 and in 2011 the reference 5270 with their in-house CH29 movement. Replacing the reference 5970, Patek Philippe not only used a new movement, but also created a larger case with flared stepped lugs at 41 mm compared to the smaller 39 mm of the previous reference. The dial of the first series (5270G 001) was redesigned with the tachometer removed and replaced by a 1/5 seconds track and the day/night and leap-year indicators moved from subsidiary dials to small apertures to the left and right of the moon phase at the 6 o’clock. This new layout, along with the lowering of the seconds and 30-minute register to below the center horizontal axis gave the dial a cleaner more appealing look.

Over the years, Patek Philippe changed the dial style again, in 2013 they discontinued the first series dial and introduced two models, one with a silvered opaline dial (5270G-013) and a blue sunburst dial (5270G-014). The present watch is a limited edition of 50 pieces that celebrates Patek Philippe’s KunstWerkUhr exhibition in Munich in 2013, a ten day celebration of the brands tradition in precision watchmaking and highlighting 500 hundred years of European watchmaking history. To commemorate this event, Patek Philippe released limited editions of the reference 5130 and 5270.

The limited edition 5270 is similar to the regular model but with a few subtle differences. Available only through the Wempe Boutique in Munich, the watch features a tachometer scale and deep blue printing. Remaining in its factory plastic seal, this perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch is in new condition, complete with accessories and is fresh to the market and only the second example to appear at auction.
