  • Catalogue Essay

The cuvette of the present watch reads “Joseph Pressey Flagg from Father and Mother June 13, 1929”, while it is impossible to tell the full correct story of this watch without documentation, an online research finds a Joseph Pressey Flagg of Portland Maine celebrated his 21st birthday in 1929. At the start of the 20th century, expensive gifts such as a pocket watch with chain and knife would have been an appropriate to celebrate the special occasion. The fantastical griffin, a combination of lion and eagle, represented watchfulness and courage, attributes for a young man embarking on his life’s journey.

The Patek Philippe fitted presentation box is further embossed Joseph P. Flagg, as well as the watch knife monogrammed “JPF”. Today, there is less appreciation for the workmanship and skill required to create works of art like the present lot, however for connoisseurs this lovely gifts makes a welcome addition to one’s collection.
